A Trashy Tale

Now please, dear readers, please don’t be alarmed,
and hopefully not too disappointed if that’s your take.
The reputation of any persons won’t here be harmed,
nor any occurances or events will this story partake,
and you’ll not be reading about porn for goodness sake.
But you’ll learn about trash, more than you wanted to know,
and if you prefer the term “garbage”, it’s still apropos.

In the United States at least, trash is a growing affliction,
each of us, at home and at work, creating 4.5 pounds a day
of a commodity we’d as soon not have, without contradiction.
A 70 year old has generated 50 tons of trash, says one survey,
as much as 10 African bull elephants together would weigh.
And, although recycling trash in the US has steadily grown,
two-thirds still wind up in a landfill or incinerator it’s known.

In terms of weight, “yard trimmings” top the list of trash created,
and it’s no surprise “food scraps” follow closely at second place,
while “newspapers, books and magazines” are bronze metal rated,
and “glass and metal food containers” 4th, in an unwelcome chase,
there can’t be many whose generation of trash paints a happy face.
But acquiring trash is inevitable, a natural part of the human scene,
and the real problem today is in not nearly enough “thinking green”.

The two-thirds of waste, that could be, but isn’t recycled today
fuels a multitude of environmental problems already out of control,
and the time is now to achieve higher recycling numbers to display.
It’s simple really, if it’s recyclable, allow recycling to be your goal,
not only in the United States, but around the globe as a whole.
Recycling is an easy way to do your part, help save planet earth,
it’s hard to imagine an easier effort with so much worth.

Poet’s Note:

The table below indicates the top 10 categories
of recyclable trash, in terms of the total weight
generated by a person 70 years old living in
the United States, as well as the percentage
of these items actually recycled today, in 2008.

If you question the percentage recycled for # 9,
Electric Appliances, I’m in full agreement with
you, but 65% is what I read when I did my
research to write this poem.

  1. I agree, that we all make our own garbage and I try really hard to recycle. Yes, baby diapers etc sure do fill up the landfill. Maybe they’ll come up with earth friendly or they should just go back to good ole cloth. :)

Hello again, Maggie, and thanks for your second comment on this poem. It’s nice to know we’re in agreement, but it’s too bad our agreement pertains to an overall non-green world. Oh well, that’s not your fault or mine, we’re doing our part. Perhaps other readers of this poem will take heed and begin to recycle, or at least recycle more items more often, and put thinking green high on their list of things to do.

  2. Another creative poem and so true about the garbage and trash we accumulate. We sure have our share around here. Tomorrow is garbage day and our recycling and garbage and yard debris is filled to the brim!! Thanks for sharing another great poem :)

Hey there, Maggie, haven’t seen you in a while and it’s certainly a pleasure to have you back at “the mine”!

Yes, trash, and how we dispose of it, is a problem throughout the world. And, since the world’s population is growing, it’s going to get even worse if more of the planet’s citizens don’t start “thinking green”. Just think of the extra trash generated due to the birth of a baby. . .disposable diapers, wipes, baby food jars, etc. As said in the poem, the time to think green is now.

Thank you for your visit and welcome comment/compliment. Please don’t be a stranger. I hope to see you here again soon.

  3. From the title I thought you were about to reveal some really interesting trash on someone or someones and you did, just not quite the type of trash I expected.

The problem with humans is that they are destroying the earth as they destroy themselves. Gaia will have her revenge. http://www.ecolo.org/lovelock/world-in-our-hands.html
With too many people on the earth I expect there will be far too much trash until the people are reduced in number.

Those who survive the next one hundred years will probably be back to being hunter gathers who get excited whenever they uncover a large landfill. One never knows what treasures may be found there.

After all, one person’s trash is another persons treasure.

Thanks for writing such an interesting and topical poem.

Hi there, David, and welcome back to the mine!

Yes, the title of this poem was a rather “trashy trick” wasn’t it? I just hope there aren’t too many disappointed readers when they find out what it’s actually about lol.

I agree with you that unfortunately, America, and for that matter the world, has a very rough road ahead. I can’t imagine the world returning to caveman days, to my mind today’s society is much too far advanced in technology for that. But I can see the possiblity of another crisis as bad as 1929 in the US if we don’t take appropriate action and fast. And, of course, a total collapse of the US economy would have severe repercussions around the globe. And today, 11/19/08, the Dow dropped to it’s lowest level in 5 years.

Thanks very much for your visit, your analysis, and kind compliment. I, for one, will follow the link in your comment to see what I can learn, and look forward to seeing you at poetrymine again soon.

  4. Oh my, you got my attention. I caught my breath when I saw
the title but as I read it my blood pressure lowered. However,
knowing how much trash is “trashed” may make it rise again.
Of course, we all need to make a sincere effort to go green
and save our planet. Your poem gives much insight of the
predicament that an over abundance of “discards” has caused.
Hopefully, the green up will catch on and soon we can see a
much greener earth. This poem should make it to an environ-
mental publication as well as other relevant printings. The
statistics are a nice addition also. Good work and research!

Hello, Edie, always great to see you at poetrymine!

Of course you realize that I purposely used the title of this poem to make readers wonder if it might be racy and full of sexual or other impropriety. That’s one good way to get attention lol.

I’m with you all the way in that people the world over need to “go green”, and the time to do that is now. It may already be too late for some of planet earth’s environmental problems to be corrected, and I have a bad feeling too many fail to see it’s importance, or are unwilling to put forth the small effort it takes. There may be untold numbers who keep their home spotless, but feel no responsibity to keep the only home we all share, planet earth, “clean”. Hopefully, education and more publicity and awareness will change that. There are very few citizens of our planet who can’t in some way contribute to a cleaner and more healthy “green” environment through recycling waste.

As always, I thank you for your visit, loyal readership, and astute and welcome comment.

  5. When I read the title, I pictured something racier than trash, but the message is one worth saying….we all need to do our share to recycle what can be and start living greener than we may have been. Our environment needs all the help we can give to clear up the mess we have made. I didn’t anticipate this topic, but I once again had a good read of a poem well written. You are fortunate to be so talented.

Always thrilled to see you down at “the mine” Brigitte.

Yes, our rock is replete with problems now, not just here in the US, and not just environmental issues either. I agree wholeheartedly that citizens of this planet need to start thinking green, and the time is now. Same goes for financial and
a host of other issues as well.

I think you for the visit, and for yet another wonderful and welcome comment. I’ll be looking for you again very soon here at “the mine”, where miner’s lighted helmets are no charge because I don’t sell them lol.
